Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Chronic facial pain -- pain in or around the ear, tender jaw, stiff or locked jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, headaches and neck aches -- may arise from TMJ, a group of often painful disorders affecting the jaw and chewing muscles. Common causes of TMJ include:
- Trauma to the head or neck
- Oral habits such as clenching or grinding of the teeth
- "Bad bite" or missing teeth
- Arthritis
- Malalignment of the upper and lower jawbones
Dr. Karim Hussain undertakes a variety of treatments to relieve pain and restore function in patients suffering from TMJ. Among the most common TMJ conditions he treats are arthromyalgia, disc problems and ankylosis.
Facial Deformity
Disproportion of the jaws or soft tissues may result in facial deformity and an abnormality of the meeting of the teeth (called malocclusion). Orthognathic surgery is performed to properly align the upper and lower jaw. The repositioning of teeth and facial bones improves both the function and the appearance of the teeth and mouth. Dr. Hussain is able to correct facial deformity and malocclusion.
Facial Trauma
Surgery both restores function and improves the cosmetic appearance of the injured tissues. Dr. Karim Hussain is specially trained in treating both new and longstanding complex injuries of the facial bones and soft tissues; when required utilizing 3 dimensional imaging and stereolithographic modelling techniques.
